FAQ - Students / Requestors - Gradtutors Tuition Agency Print E-mail

This page contains useful information for students / parents. For tutors, please visit the FAQ page dedicated for tutors.

A) General Questions

1. What is gradtutors.com?

Gradtutors is one of the more established tuition agency in Singapore. Parents/students can find and hire private tutors from us for home tuition. We also provide tutor recruitment service for tuition centers. Gradtutors.com is operated by Gradtutors Singapore Pte. Ltd, a Singapore registered company with ACRA. Company registration Number: 200403797N

2. What are the benefits or 1-to-1 Home Tuition?

Unlike in schools or learning centers whereby lesson time is fixed, your child can have tuition at the comfort of your house and class schedule arrangement is flexible. Private tuition is most useful when your child is the playful type with low attention span or face difficulties in catching up certain subjects taught in school. A personal tutor can focus on particular area or subjects that your child is specially weak. Another significant benefit is that you can choose your own tutor and the tutor can customize the lesson plan, this is not likely possible in schools.

B) Communication

1) Why can't I receive the emails that the coordinators sent me?

Once you have submitted a form request to us online, the system will auto-generate important emails to you. Please check your inbox for important emails for proper communication with us, including your JUNK / SPAM mail folder. If you are using Yahoo! or Hotmail, it is likely that our important emails have landed into your Junk or spam folder. It will be great if you can also add " This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it " as a contact in your email address book. This will prevent our future emails going into the junk folder.

2) Why am I receiving strange calls which shows "Blocked" or "Unknown" on my phone, no caller ID is shown?

Because we make large number of outgoing calls with VoIP [Skype / Google Voice], our caller ID may be displayed as "BLOCKED" or "Unknown" on your phone.

C) Service Related

It is often much faster if students / parents can search and shortlist a few tutors and let our coordinators know the tutor ID. This helps to speed up the recruitment process because we can contact the tutors directly and know better what kind of tutors you want to find.

1. I have submitted the tutor request form. How long can my child start to have tuition?

We will contact our tutors within 2 business days and get back to you with suitable profiles within 5  working days. Normally your child can start to have tuition within a week.

2. What if my child do not like the tutor. Can I change another one?

If you are not happy with the newly engaged tutor, please let us know within 2 lessons after the commencement of 1st lesson. We will replace another tutor for you without charging any agency fee for the 1st tutor. However, you will need to pay for the 2 lessons to the 1st tutor.

3. Your coordinator told me that no suitable tutor is found. What can I do?

In some cases especially during exam periods, it is indeed more difficult for us to find a tutor in a short period. This is also true if the assignment is short term. The best tutors are normally occupied with their schedule full. We suggest hiring takes place at least 2 months before exam period. You can ask the coordinator to search again or show them particular profiles that you are more interested. At the same time, you can also consider increasing the salary that you are willing to offer the tutor. We believe paying $20-30 for a more qualified tutor makes a lot of difference. If you want your child to be the best, then the best way is to stay with the best.

4. What kind of tutors do you recommend?

Most of our registered tutors are university undergrads and graduates with diploma/degree qualification. We also have some experienced tutors who provide full time tutoring and MOE trained school teachers. Tutor selection is very subjective. But typically, we notice that 2 kinds of tutors perform quite well:

  • If budget is your primary concern, young tutors who just finished and performed well in 'O' or 'A' level may fit the job. Their rates are affordable and they are very familiar with the local syllabus since they just finished the exam.
  • Full Time Tutors who are currently giving tuition to students whose levels and subjects are similar to your child. Or school teachers who are familiar with the syllabus.

D) Tutor Profile and Selection

1. Is the information provided on the tutor profile page accurate?

The information that you see on the tutor profile page is provided by tutors who signed up with Gradtutors.com. We try to verify the information [through feedback / past experience / tele-interview]. However, we cannot gurantee that every profile is accurate due to large number of tutors.

2. I have seen some tutor profiles on the website but there are no stars. Are they qualified?

These tutors may be new or not rated by our coordinators yet. Or sometimes we may have insufficient information about the tutor to provide an accurate rating.

3. Why can't I view/open the tutor profile that the coordinator sent me?

Our coordinator will send you the profile url which will look like this: E.g www.gradtutors.com/sg/123. If clicking on the tutor profile url does not work, pls copy and paste the url onto your browser. Or just enter/replace the tutor ID at the back of the url -www.gradtutors.com/sg/[tutorid]

4. I saw many tutor profiles on your website. How do you verify their qualifications?

When tutors register with us, we will provide an option for them to upload their education certificate. Our coordinators will manually check for their qualification in soft copy. When a tutor is verified, there will be an icon "Certificate verified" on their profile.

Education Certificate Verification

We will also inform every tutor to bring along their NRIC and original educational certificates for the student/parents to verify on the first lesson. This helps to ensure that the tutor that you hire through us is qualified to teach.

E) Agency / Tuition Fee Payment

1. Do I need to pay any agency fee to Gradtutors.com?

Gradtutors.com operates like normal tuition agencies. Upon successful matching, we will collect a small amount of agency fee from the student, which is typically 50% of tutor's 1st salary payment. This amount is deducted from the tutor's salary, but paid by the student directly to Gradtutors. Students / parents do not need to pay us extra. However, we may collect the agency fee from the requestor if the assignment is short term.

2. How is Tuition Agency Fee Calculated?

Gradtutors.com will collect a one time agency fee from the student after 2 lessons have commenced. This amount is normally 50% of tutors' agreed salary (for 1 salary period) with the student. This fee is merely a deduction from the tutor's salary, there is no additional charges collected from the student side.

Example:

1 salary period consist of (4 lessons x 2 hours/lesson), with tuition fee = $20/hr

Tuition agency fee = 50% x (8 hours x $20) = $80
